Fingerprints

If you have nothing special to do today and you want to fill a little empty time, why don’t you sing? I’ll even suggest the song: Happy Birthday To You. Why that song? Because today is the birthday of some pretty famous people. “And many more…” to Willie Nelson, by my calculation 91 today; funny man Jerry Seinfeld; tennis great Andre Agassi; and the late but great race car driver: Dale Earnhardt. As I look back over my shoulder, I remember the times each one of these performers made me want to jump up and applaud their skills and the thrills they brought to the world.

But there is always something else I see when I take the time to look back over that same shoulder. I see the fingerprint of God. Everywhere I look: family, friends, work, particular events, special moments, there is the fingerprint and I know: God was there. I didn’t know it in the moment, but I conclude that since God was present in all those moments of my life, isn’t it reasonable to think that God is leaving fingerprints everywhere today? Just because you don’t see the movement of God in and through your life doesn’t mean that you are alone. The promise was given: “I will never leave you alone” were the words spoken by Jesus, and He has kept his promise. The Holy Spirit lives and moves among us.

Take a few minutes today and think back to those times when you said to yourself: “I was lucky to get through that,” or “I’m really fortunate to have…” or “I’m sure glad I made that choice.” These are the “intersection” times in our lives when we make choices: this road or that one; yes or no; should I or shouldn’t I?

Then check for fingerprints.

The Lord’s fingerprints are all over me, especially my shoulder which he taps often and ask ‘Gary! What are you thinking?’
