Rock Climbing

8 Sep

Sometimes we are so focused on a task, an assignment, an obstacle that we don’t see alternatives or options. Poor guy. He knows the rock is in the way. He knows he has to get beyond it. And in his admirable determination, he begins to climb. Too bad he doesn’t open his eyes, glance to the right or the left and see the better way. Is there virtue in climbing over the rock?

A faith parallel: Sometimes we get so focused on a religious rule or doctrinal position that we begin to worship it, and when we do, we shut down other possibilities…things like charity, mercy, even compassion. Do you remember the man who used to say: “You have heard it said….but I say to you”? He saw the better way and demonstrated that strong faith, while based on foundational principles of love and selflessness, is open to a new Word, to sacred insight, to the mystery of The Spirit’s movement. Faith is foundational and fluid at the same time. One without the other puts a lot of rocks in the way.

Maybe the best option is this: Keep your eye fixed on Jesus…what he did and what he said. Stay close to him. He knows where the big rocks are, and the better way. Press on.
